Contemporary thinking about archives remains bound up in the vexed relationship between the political and the knowable. This essay explores the political epistemology of archives and archival practices, seeking to dislodge the contemporary scholarly discourse on archives from its tendency to instrumentalize archivation as either a repository of knowledge or an apparatus of power. In studying the collections of two members of the surrealist movement, this essay examines the extent to which archival practices instead suspend the certainties of political desire, disclosing the persistence of discontinuity within the closed systems into which such certainties always threaten to develop. It focuses on two archival collections: the studio of André Breton at 42, rue Fontaine in Paris, and the figural “kitchen” of Leonora Carrington's paintings and writings.

Dans le cadre d’une épistémologie des archives et des pratiques d’archivage, cet article vise à extraire le discours contemporain sur les archives de sa tendance à instrumentaliser l’archivage, que celui-ci soit conçu comme un réservoir de savoir ou comme un dispositif de pouvoir. À partir de l’étude des collections de deux membres du mouvement surréaliste, on va voir dans quelle mesure les pratiques d’archivage suspendent au contraire les certitudes du désir politique. Ce qui se dégage, c’est la persistance de discontinuités au sein des systèmes clos que de telles certitudes menacent toujours de mettre en place. L'ethnographie revêt deux fonctions : observer et enregistrer. Ces fonctions, qui sont au coeur de la pratique anthropologique depuis ses débuts, ont toujours été renforcées par les nouveaux outils (ou médias) dont s’est dotée la discipline. Centré sur la production iconographique de l’anthropologue italien Ernesto De Martino, cet article propose en premier lieu une esquisse des objets d’étude de cet auteur, en insistant sur leur valeur historiographique. Ainsi, les crises de possession provoquées par la morsure d'un arachnide représentent les « reliquats folklorico-religieux » du tarentisme, à envisager comme documents survivants. Ces phénomènes rituels régulent une tension entre mémoire et oubli. À partir de là, sont mises en relief la relation entre archive et discipline anthropologique, ainsi que les logiques d'archivage inhérentes aux différentes formes de pathos, à travers le corps, la voix, les couleurs — éléments clés de la médiation archaïque du rituel. Enfin, dans un deuxième temps, nous examinons les « outils » démartiniens, en particulier les appareils de captation des images photographiques et filmiques, et leur contribution à la recherche de survivances.

The two ethnographic functions of observing and recording, which have stood at the center of anthropological practice since its very beginnings, have always been reinforced through that discipline's accession to new tools (or media). By focusing on the iconographic production of the Italian anthropologist Ernesto De Martino, this article proposes, first and foremost, to sketch his objects of study through an insistence on their historiographical value. Within this context, the crises of possession triggered by Arachnida bites function as the “folkloric-religious relics” of Tarentism and might thus come to be considered as surviving documents of a tension between memory and forgetting. Not only does this open the door to a discussion of the relation between the archive and the discipline of anthropology, but also of the archival logistics behind various forms of pathos. These can be traced, in particular, through the study of key elements of archaic ritualistic mediation such as the body, the voice and color. Secondly, this article investigates the “tools,” such as photographic and filmic imaging devices, by which De Martino sought to contribute to a research on survival.

The sudden and permeating rise of digital technologies has been widely investigated by film critics and scholars. However, most studies tend to focus on the impact of digital technologies on contemporary film production, distribution, exhibition and the finished products it brings forth, reserving too little attention to the massive digitization of born-analog films. The production of digital motion pictures marks an unprecedented breaking point in history, putting the very nature of “film” and “cinema” at stake, while the digitization of film prints risks having an irreversible feedback effect on cinema's technological history. Focusing on two case studies—the 1995 restoration of the 1949 color version of Jacques Tati's Jour de fête and the discovery of some 16mm reels on nitrate stock in a collection deposited with the Museo Nazionale del Cinema in Torino, Italy—we illuminate the importance of technology for film historiography and reassert the need for a joint effort on the part of archives and academic institutions in the preservation of film memory for future generations.

Le surgissement subit et envahissant des technologies numériques a fait l’objet de nombreuses études, de la part des chercheurs et des critiques de cinéma. Cependant, la plupart de ces études s’attachent surtout à l’impact des technologies numériques sur le film contemporain : sur sa production, sur sa distribution, sur sa diffusion, sur les produits qu’il génère. Dans la mesure où la production de films numériques est un point de rupture sans équivalent dans l’histoire, qui met en question la nature même du « film » et du « cinéma », un risque surgit, à savoir que la numérisation des pellicules ait un effet irréversible sur l’histoire technologique du cinéma. Nous traitons de deux études de cas: la restauration en 1995 de la copie couleur du film de Jacques Tati de 1949, Jour de fête ; la découverte de quelques bobines de nitrate 16 mm, dans une collection déposée au Museo Nazionale del Cinema de Turin, Italie. Ceci permet d’expliquer l’importance de la technologie pour l’historiographie du cinéma, et de réaffirmer la nécessité, pour les archives et les institutions académiques chargées de préserver la mémoire du cinéma pour les générations futures, de joindre leurs efforts.

The 21^st century library has become a central nervous system for new and emergent media technologies, a site that centralizes increasingly decentralized networks and systems, and a localizable place in which new and emergent media technologies have not only found a home, an embodied place where they can be contained, but also a broader site in which the encounter between citizens, public knowledge and culture is staged. This article seeks to explore the “technologization” of the library. More specifically, it examines how this process of “technologization” has transformed the ways we use and understand the library as a public space and what this means for its future. The idea of the library as an important medium in itself has been overlooked in the broader context of communication and media studies.

Un système nerveux central pour les technologies des nouveaux médias émergents ; un site qui centralise des réseaux et des systèmes de plus en plus décentralisés ; non seulement un emplacement localisable où ces technologies nouvelles sont chez elles, un endroit incarné qui peut les contenir, mais encore un site qui met en scène la rencontre entre citoyens, savoir public et culture. Cet article s’attache à explorer la « technologisation » de la bibliothèque. L’article étudie plus précisément comment ce processus de « technologisation » a transformé notre utilisation et notre compréhension de la bibliothèque en tant qu’espace public et ce que cela peut signifier pour son avenir. L’idée défendue est que la bibliothèque est un médium important en soi et n’a pas été suffisamment explorée dans le contexte et des études en communication et de celles des médias.

Cet article examine comment Google est susceptible d’affecter la mémoire. Pour ce faire, plusieurs détours sont nécessaires : après un rappel de quelques notions élémentaires sur la mémoire, nous examinerons rapidement certaines techniques de mémoire pour mieux caractériser l’écriture comme instrument de mémoire. Les supports de l’écriture retiendront ensuite notre intérêt, avec une attention particulière pour le codex qui, avec sa géométrie particulière, a dominé l’essentiel des deux derniers millénaires. Enfin, nous montrerons comment le codex donne lieu à deux formes d’analyse : la société des textes et la sociologie des textes. Tandis que la numérisation touche aux deux, Google retravaille en profondeur la société des textes, et c’est sur cette base que nous montrerons comment ce dispositif restructure profondément notre mémoire, comment il crée un trompe-l’oeil mémoriel.

This article explores the ways in which Google affects memory. Several detours will be necessary: firstly, it calls to mind a number of basic notions pertaining to memory, ther it examines certain forms of mnemonic technology in order to better grasp the function of writing as a memory tool. Next, it focuses on writing formats such as, most prominently, the codex which has dominated the last two millennia through its specific geometry. Finally, it demonstrates how the codex gives rise to two forms of analysis: the society of text and the sociology of text. While digitization touches upon each of these, Google must be seen as reworking the society of text in great depth. It is upon this basis that this article shows how Google operates an in-depth restructuration of memory, creating a memorial trompe l’oeil in the process.

Like a brilliant specter from the vast recesses of the cultural universe, the digital archive sweeps through the night skies of the mind, turning time’s past into real-time, lighting up spatial horizons with light-space, folding the historical past into the projected future, breaking down fixed boundaries, always following the unpredictable pathways of the awaiting imagination. Never really interested in truth-telling, nor particularly loyal to the concept of bunker archeology, the digital archive is that rarest of cultural phenomenon: a code matrix tracing an uncertain arc across the human condition, projecting retrieved memories into the present, here confronting the solid matter of reality with imaginary reconstructions of the past, there gathering speed as the code matrix is propelled forward by the gravitational force-fields of the surrounding planets of society, economy, and culture, always becoming in the process something more intense, more vivid, more purely imaginary.

Rien de plus imaginaire que l’archive numérique. Tel un spectre brillant sorti des vastes recoins de l’univers culturel, l’archive numérique s’élance dans les ciels nocturnes de l’esprit. Elle change le passé temporel en temps-réalité ; elle éclaire les horizons avec de la lumière-espace ; repliant le passé historique, elle le projette vers le futur ; elle détruit les limites fixes ; elle prend toujours les sentiers imprévisibles des attentes de l’imagination. Comme elle n’a jamais réellement d’intérêt à dire la vérité et qu’elle ne respecte pas particulièrement le concept de bunker archéologie (Paul Virilio), l’archive numérique constitue un cas très rare de phénomène culturel : c’est une matrice de codes, qui trace un arc incertain par-dessus la condition humaine, récupérant une mémoire qu’elle projette dans le présent, en confrontant d’un côté la solidité matérielle du réel à la reconstruction imaginaire du passé, en prenant de l’autre de la vitesse tandis que la matrice des codes est projetée en avant par ces champs de force gravitationnels que sont les planètes environnantes — société, économie, culture. Dans ce processus, l’archive numérique devient toujours plus intense, plus vive, plus purement imaginaire.

Taking a cinematographic figure as a starting point (the mounting staircase shot in Ariane Mnouchkine’s 1978 film Molière), this article examines a form of temporality that is inherent to the archival gesture and is contained in the tension between a conserved present and a past projected from the perspective of its future ending. This, in turn, allows for a better understanding of the displacements at work within the temporality of digital environments.
