Since the mid 1970s, there has been a considerable rise in the number of festivals and seasonal venues whose partial or complete programing is dedicated to international theatre. These festivals and seasonal venues—which today number in the hundreds—are mostly located in Western Europe and form vast yet informal circuits followed by Quebec theatre artists when touring abroad since the 1980s. Montreal is structurally part of such circuits since the establishment of the Festival de Théâtre des Amériques (1985-2006) and its successor the Festival TransAmériques (2007). Borrowing its theoretical framework from network sociology this article explores the international networks (personnel, touring, and coproduction) in which the Festival TransAmériques and its representatives participate as well as the festival’s role as a mediator between here and abroad.

Depuis le milieu des années 1970, on assiste à la multiplication du nombre de festivals et de diffuseurs saisonniers dont tout ou partie de la programmation est consacrée au théâtre étranger. Ces festivals et diffuseurs—qui se comptent aujourd’hui par centaines—sont principalement concentrés en Europe de l’Ouest et forment de vastes circuits informels que privilégient les artistes du théâtre québécois depuis les années 1980 lorsqu’ils tournent à l’extérieur de leurs frontières. Montréal appartient en propre à ces circuits internationaux depuis la fondation du Festival de Théâtre des Amériques (1985-2006) et celle de son successeur, le Festival TransAmériques (2007), dont l’étude sera au coeur du présent article. Inspirée de la sociologie des réseaux, cette étude explore les réseaux internationaux (personnels, de diffusion ou de coproduction) auxquels participent ce festival et ses représentants, de même que son rôle de médiateur entre l’ici et l’ailleurs.

This article offers a study of the Chilean translation of Daniel Danis’s play Le Chant du Dire-Dire, which was produced in accordance with the functionalist principles of the skopos theory of translation (Vermeer 1978). This approach subordinates the translation of a text to the function (or the skopos) that is assigned to the target text, defined in conformity with the target text’s own communicational context and consistent with its purpose and addressees. This skopos facilitates the establishment of a concrete translation plan that defines the translation choices. For its flexibility, this article proposes this theory as an efficient methodological alternative for the translation of this stylistically and aesthetically complex play. In particular, the translation plan presents a “third way” between a “literary” translation [littérarité : that is, formal and linguistic properties of a text that distinguish it from other kinds of texts as “literature”] and the play’s adaptation to a Chilean context; rather, the translation results in a Chilean version that attempts to retain the stylistic particularities and the expressive inventions found within Danis’s play [its littérarité].

Dans cet article, Pelegrí Kristić propose une étude de la traduction chilienne de la pièce Le chant du Dire-Dire de Daniel Danis, réalisée dans le cadre de la théorie fonctionnaliste du skopos (Vermeer 1978). Cette approche postule que la traduction d’un texte est subordonnée à la fonction (ou skopos) assignée au texte d’arrivée définie suivant le contexte de communication qui sera le sien et suivant l’usage et les usagers auxquels il est destiné. Ce skopos permet ainsi d’établir un projet de traduction concret, qui définit les choix traductifs. Grâce à sa souplesse, nous proposons cette théorie comme une alternative méthodologique efficace pour la traduction de cette pièce, étant donné sa complexité stylistique et esthétique. Particulièrement, notre projet de traduction offre une « troisième voie » entre la littérarité et l’adaptation de la pièce au contexte chilien, en produisant une version chilienne qui essaie de garder les particularités stylistiques et les trouvailles de Danis.

This article examines how La Tempête, a 2011 collaboration between Robert Lepage’s theatre company, Ex Machina, and the Huron-Wendat Nation on the Wendake First Nations reserve, fostered moments of productive interculturalism both on stage and off through what I have termed scenographic dramaturgy. Lepage’s process of scenic re-“writing” responds to the evocative potential of individual performer bodies and a production’s given physical location to craft a postdramatic adaptation rooted in highly physical and visual performance text. This analysis draws on intercultural theory, scenographic dramaturgy, postcolonial theory, and postdramatic adaptation and includes a brief survey of Quebecois and First Nations Shakespeare productions in Canada, highlighting some of the potential traps of staging postcolonial interpretations, including power imbalances among intercultural collaborators and reductionist portrayals of difference. Ex Machina and the Huron-Wendat Nation’s ability to avoid many of these traps will be interrogated through examples illustrating how scenographic dramaturgy’s three central components—bodies in motion, architectonic scenography, and historical spatial mapping—function as both a process and product fostering progressive dialogue between cultures.

En 2011, la compagnie Ex Machina de Robert Lepage s’associait à la Première Nation huronne-wendat de Wendake pour une production de La Tempête. Cet article examine comment cette collaboration a donné lieu à des moments d’interculturalisme productifs tant sur scène qu’en coulisses grâce à ce que Melissa Poll appelle la « dramaturgie scénographique ». En effet, la ré-« écriture » scénique de Lepage met à profit le potentiel évocateur du corps de chaque interprète et l’emplacement du spectacle, afin de produire une adaptation postdramatique enracinée dans un texte scénique très visuel et physique. Puisant aux études interculturelles, à la dramaturgie scénique, aux études postcoloniales et à l’adaptation postdramatique, cette étude propose un bref survol des productions québécoises et autochtones de pièces shakespeariennes au Canada afin de mettre en évidence quelques pièges que pose la mise en scène d’interprétations postcoloniales, notamment un éventuel déséquilibre dans le rapport de force entre les collaborateurs interculturels et une représentation réductrice de la différence. Dans cet article, l’auteutre tentera de voir si Ex Machina et la Première Nation huronne-wendat ont su éviter ces écueils en examinant divers exemples qui illustrent le fonctionnement des trois composantes centrales à cette dramaturgie scénique—les corps en mouvement, la scénographie architectonique et la cartographie historico-spatiale—qui, en tant que procédés et produits, encouragent le dialogue entre cultures.

This article uses the tools of intercultural and translation theory to explore the production and reception of La Reine de beauté de Leenane, the 2001 French language premiere of Martin McDonagh’s The Beauty Queen of Leenane, translated by Fanny Britt and produced by Théâtre La Licorne in Montreal. Creative team and critics alike understood the play as a realistic tragicomedy, and valued the production for the parallels it offered to real-life conditions of rural underdevelopment in contemporary Quebec, and for the ways in which the play’s depiction of Ireland was understood to resonate with Quebec’s own problematic postcoloniality. Such a reading does not take on board the strong current of exaggeration in McDonagh’s text nor the extent to which the play offers a satiric commentary on Irishness (and national identity more broadly) as commodity. The article weighs the positive effects of the sense of self-recognition and solidarity Quebecois artists and critics located in the play against the fact that inaccurate and misleading information about Ireland was disseminated via the production and its critical reception. Understanding this and other productions of plays in translation as intercultural encounters, the article advocates for the presence of interlocuters in such exchanges, who can speak on behalf the culture being represented.

Dans cet article, Karen Fricker puise aux études interculturelles et à la traductologie pour explorer la production et l’accueil de La Reine de beauté de Leenane, une traduction française par Fanny Britt de la pièce The Beauty Queen of Leenane de Martin McDonagh, mise en scène au Théâtre La Licorne de Montréal en 2001. L’équipe de création et la critique ont cru qu’il s’agissait d’une tragicomédie réaliste et ont mis en valeur les parallèles tracés dans la pièce entre les conditions de vie dans les régions sous-développées du Québec rural d’aujourd’hui et la façon dont la représentation de l’Irlande dans la pièce évoquait la postcolonialité problématique du Québec. Or, une telle lecture ne tient pas compte de l’exagération qui informe le texte de McDonagh ni de la satire dans le traitement du caractère irlandais (et, dans un sens plus large, de l’identité nationale) comme commodité. Fricker mesure les effets positifs de l’identification à la pièce et de la solidarité des artistes et des critiques québécois en regard du fait que des renseignements faux et trompeurs sur l’Irlande ont été propagés par la production et sa réception critique. Sachant qu’une pièce en traduction est une rencontre interculturelle, l’auteure fait valoir que la présence d’interlocuteurs capables de prendre le parti de la culture représentée serait souhaitable.
