Abstract
The camera’s gaze generally applies to narrative and fiction film, but this article proposes to interrogate what happens when we gaze into our portable devices at the time of posing for them. Through analysis of travel “dronies” and a GoPro advertisement, the author will demonstrate how our gaze and gestures towards the camera establish a dialogical relationship between the subject and a presumed viewer when users interact with their devices. The author will also show how theories of the camera’s gaze give an account of the concepts of immediacy and artificiality, which are essential to an understanding of present-day mobilography practices. The examples given illustrate the same effects produced by the camera gaze in a fiction film, as the viewer becomes a part of a cinematic view of the world. The concept of the camera gaze also applies to the practice of the selfie: conceiving self-representation through mobile devices as cinematic enables the author to underscore the role of mediation in the management of our relationship with the other and to go beyond the critique of narcissism too often made of these practices.
