How and where do architecture and performance collide? Theatre studies has been, over the course of the last decade, increasingly interested in the relationship between stage and space; that interest, however, has primarily been figured by marrying theories of human geography with studies of theatrical performance. "The Line, the Crack, and the Possibility of Architecture" asks what it might mean to explore the spaces of performance through the lens of another plastic art—the art of building—and investigates what the discourses of architecture theory, both classical and (post)modern, might have to say to those of us who study the vicissitudes of feminist performance. The article tracks a figure I call the guerrilla actress-architect; she uses her performing body to reshape the plastic spaces of her world and asks us to consider the possibility that feminist performance may, in fact, be a kind of living architectural practice.

Où se croisent l’architecture et la performance? Au cours des dix dernières années, des chercheurs en études théâtrales s’intéressent de plus en plus au rapport entre la scène et l’espace. Or, cet intérêt s’est manifesté principalement par le recours à des théories de la géographie humaine dans le contexte d’études de la représentation théâtrale. Solga se demande ce qui se produit quand on regarde l’espace de la performance à travers la lentille d’un autre art plastique : l’art de la construction. Elle explore ensuite ce qu’aurait à dire la théorie de l’architecture, tant classique que (post)moderne, à ceux d’entre nous qui étudions les vicissitudes de la performance féministe. Solga suit enfin la piste de la comédienne-architecte guérilla, une figure qui sort de son corps de comédienne pour transformer les espaces plastiques de son monde et nous demande d’imaginer que la performance féministe peut en fait constituer un type de pratique architecturale vivante.

In The Practice of Everyday Life, Michel de Certeau asserts that "what the map cuts up, the story cuts across" (129), stressing the role of a nomadic, storytelling subject in the production of space. The [murmur] project, an experiment in site-specific psychogeography and cybercartography (http://murmurtoronto.ca), explores the relationship between spaces represented cartographically, spaces lived through audience explorations, and the (imaginary) representational spaces generated through oral histories. The site-specific stories of participants, delivered by cell phone to audience members at specially marked sites, transform reified places into lived spaces that the user can explore and interpret in real time. [murmur] situates the subject simultaneously at the site of the referent and within an imaginary (aural) space of representation, compelling the audience member to reconcile the two. In exploring the representational frame (and its boundaries), the user becomes an active participant in the semiotic processes of spatial production. Thus, [murmur] can be seen as an important intervention: rather than accepting the reified city as a given, or acting on the subject in a way that limits semiosis, the places the project constructs through discourse encourage the emergence (or becoming) of a nomadic subject who produces new meanings through a process of spatial dialectics. Equally important, [murmur] foregrounds the need to rethink cities not as sets of buildings and objects, but rather as places where historical and subjective information is latent in every materiality and, similarly, where the materiality of city is seen as the result of the performative processes of spatial production.

Ainsi, on peut dire de [murmur] qu’il s’agit d’une intervention importante : au lieu d’accepter la ville réifiée telle qu’elle est ou d’agir sur le sujet de façon à limiter la sémiose, les espaces que construit ce projet par son discours encouragent l’émergence (ou le « devenir ») d’un sujet nomade qui produit de nouveaux sens par une dialectique de l’espace. De façon tout aussi importante, [murmur] souligne qu’il faut repenser la ville non plus comme un ensemble d’édifices et d’objets, mais comme un lieu où circulent des renseignements historiques et subjectifs présents de façon latente dans tous les matériaux. De même, la matérialité de la ville serait conçue comme le résultat des processus performatifs de la production spatiale.

This "meditation" pursues four objectives. The first is to provide an introduction to a variety of psychological interpretations of the concept of intimacy in terms of its motivations, characteristics, and functions within the larger understanding of the construction, maintenance, and expansion of the "self" in relationship and interaction. The second objective is to attempt to locate these psychological observations on intimacy within broader socio-anthropological frameworks, in order to consider if and how they are manifest in cultural and ideological developments. The third objective is to overlay these initial findings with multiple theories of communications and media influence on individuals and communities, as they relate to the reformation of and potential for intimacy in contemporary mediatized societies. The pursuit here is of a composite "logic" of resonance, interconnection, and generalized causality within these overlapping evolutionary spheres (psychology, sociology, communications). The fourth objective is to elucidate (as opposed to "define") the elusive concept of intermedia as it is understood, analyzed, and enacted by contemporary practitioners and theorists, with a particular emphasis on the role of intimacy in terms of intention, design, and experience. Finally, the emerging theoretical insights generated are tentatively applied to a performance by the intermedial, site-specific performance troupe Bluemouth Inc. Presents. In the process of these inquiries, I hope to establish intermedia—and, specifically, intermedial intimacy—as the recognizable (though not necessarily inevitable) offspring of the previously explored personal, cultural, and ideological developments.

Cette « méditation » poursuit quatre objectifs. Le premier : présenter diverses interprétations du concept d’intimité tel qu’il est entendu dans le domaine de la psychologie (motivations, caractéristiques et fonctions) et les placer dans le cadre plus large de la construction, de l’entretien et de l’expansion du « soi » dans le contexte d’une relation et d’une interaction. Le second objectif : inscrire ces observations sur l’intimité dans un cadre socio-anthropologique plus vaste pour voir si on les retrouve dans des développements culturels et idéologiques. Le troisième objectif : superposer à ces premières constatations quelques théories de la communication ayant trait à l’influence des médias sur l’individu et la société en rapport avec la réforme de l’intimité et son potentiel dans des sociétés contemporaines médiatisées. Cet objectif est celui d’une « logique » composite de la résonnance, de l’interconnexion et de la causalité généralisée au sein même des sphères évolutionnaires qui se chevauchent (psychologie, sociologie, communication). Le quatrième objectif est de clarifier (plutôt que « définir ») le concept insaisissable d’intermédia tel que l’entendent, l’analysent et le mettent en œuvre des praticiens et théoriciens contemporains. Une importance toute particulière est accordée au rôle de l’intimité en ce qui a trait à l’intention, à la conception et à l’expérience. Et enfin, l’auteur tentera de mettre en pratique les théories en émergence en se servant de l’exemple d’une représentation intermédia localisée de la compagnie Bluemouth Inc. Au fil de son enquête, l’auteur souhaite montrer que l’intermédia – et plus précisément, l’intimité intermédia – est le produit reconnaissable (mais pas nécessairement inévitable) d’événements personnels, culturels et idéologiques explorés auparavant.

This paper interrogates the claim made by many users of super-technologies in the field of theatre entertainment that these trappings redefine audience perception in entirely new ways. What this explosion fails to address is the relationship between technology and the spectating body and how interactivity poses questions that address the specificities of the spectator in the twenty-first century. In relative magnitude, The Bus Project described here, was low tech. Nonetheless, it illustrates the use of interactive technologies in integrating performance into our everyday lives, how new audiences may be reached and how preconceived notions of spectatorship and identity may be productively troubled through locational and site-specific practices.

The Bus Project was a collaborative, media-based, public art installation undertaken by theatre and intermedia artists, computer scientists and graduate students at the University of Regina in June 2004. The central focus of the project was to open up the idea of multiculturalism and the anxieties that have grown up around the multiple coding of this term by investigating issues of immigration in the local communities (Regina and Saskatoon). As the project moved from planning to implementation, the nature of interdisciplinarity, community collaboration and assessment became central to the investigation.

Or, l’explosion de ces moyens ne dit rien du rapport qu’entretient le public avec eux et n’interroge pas l’effet de l’interactif sur la spécificité du spectateur au XXIe siècle. En termes d’importance, The Bus Project, le spectacle qui sert d’exemple ici, employait des moyens relativement rudimentaires. Et pourtant, il montre comment l’on peut user de technologies interactives pour intégrer la performance à la vie quotidienne, atteindre de nouveaux spectateurs et remettre en question de façon productive nos idées préconçues sur le spectateur et l’identité au moyen de pratiques localisées.

The Bus Project est une installation média à laquelle ont participé des artistes de théâtre et des artistes multimédia, des informaticiens et des étudiants de deuxième cycle à l’Université de Regina en juin 2004. Le projet avait pour principal objectif de présenter l’idée du multiculturalisme et les anxiétés qui entourent la codification complexe du terme en examinant les enjeux liés à l’immigration dans les villes de la région (Regina et Saskatoon). Au cours de sa réalisation, l’enquête s’est centrée peu à peu sur l’interdisciplinarité du projet et la participation des membres de la collectivité, devenus collaborateurs et évaluateurs.

This performative text was delivered by Michael Greyeyes as a keynote address at "Indigenous Film and Media in an International Context," a conference hosted by Wilfred Laurier University in association with York University in May 2007. The text examines a life in cinema through a post-colonial lens. Michael Greyeyes, an established screen actor and educator, explores the means by which native culture is constructed through media images and how indigenous performers resist, subvert and rewrite these constructions as part of their collective mandate to reclaim their own images and portrayals on screen.

Ce texte performatif a été livré par le conférencier Michael Greyeyes à Waterloo en mai 2007 lors d’un colloque sur le cinéma et les médias indigènes dans un contexte international organisé conjointement par l’Université Wilfrid Laurier et l’Université York. Greyeyes présente une vie au cinéma telle que vue à travers une lentille postcoloniale. Comédien de cinéma accompli et pédagogue, l’auteur explore les moyens par lesquels la culture autochtone est construite dans les images média et ceux par lesquels un performer indigène peut résister à cette construction, la subvertir et la réécrire. Tel serait en partie son mandat collectif: réclamer les images et les représentations de l'Autochtone au grand écran.

Legion of Memory is a site-specific performance co-created by Melanie Bennett and Andrew Houston, which was staged in an abandoned legion hall in downtown Kitchener, Ontario. Launched in June 2006 and remounted in April 2007, Legion of Memory attempts to animate the cultural displacement of the war veteran and refugee, while also exploring issues surrounding war memorials in Canada today.
