Drawing upon work presented at the 1999 ACTR meetings and situated within a decades-old debate about Canadian theatre, these four essays explore representations of the North in plays by southern and northern playwrights and theatre companies. The authors explore the history of Yukon's Nakai theatre, Quebec's "myth of the North," a popular play by a now forgotten prairie playwright, and images of the Inuit in plays by Inuit and non-Inuit.

This paper relates the history of Yukon's Nakai, a small theatre group, from its inception in 1979 to 1999. It focuses on those elements that contribute to Nakai's Northern-ness: its geographic location and relatively small population base; the personalities of those who molded it; and its development of works that originate from and deal with contact between aboriginal and non-aboriginal people and traditions. The significance of Nakai is in its Northern perceptions of issues that, while not confined to the North, are particularly apparent in a Northern context.

Le thème central porte sur les éléments qui contribuent à la spécificité nordique du théâtre Nakai: sa situation géographique et le petit bassin de population qui constitue son public, la personnalitié de chacun des gens qui ont donné forme au groupe et son interprétation de pièces de théâtre inspirées qui traitent des relations entre les peuples et les traditions autochtones et non autochtones. La particularité de Nakai découle de sa perception de thèmes qui, bien qu'ils ne soient pas limités au Nord, sont particulièrement pertinents dans un contexte nordique.

Willard Mack (a.k.a. Charles W. McLaughlin) was born in Ontario, Canada, in 1887 and at an early age moved to the United States where he spent most of his adult life involved in the theatre and film as a playwright, actor, and director. At the time of his death in Hollywood in 1934, Mr. Mack had written over forty plays, mostly adaptions of popular stories and novels or extensions of vaudeville pieces; none of them stands up to criticism and certainly none is to be found among the canon of great works, yet most of them were produced on Broadway and toured both the U.S.A. and Canada and placed the author in the company of the leading popular writers and performers of that time. Even though Willard Mack was an American, he maintained contact with Canada and chose to set a number of his plays, such as Tiger Rose and The Scarlet Fox in northern Alberta. This paper deals with Mack's image of the North in terms of his claimed connection to the region and the people he wrote about and portrayed.

This essay compares the representation of Inuit people and culture in five plays by non-Inuit, southern playwrights and three plays by Inuit in an effort to trace the construction of identity and the gaze in the context of writing for the theatre. Considered in chronological sequence, these eight plays demonstrate some of the important shifts in representation and ideological investment that occurred between 1967 and 1986.

In this working bibliography for Canadian playwright Wendy Lill, the authors have listed all the primary and secondary work they could locate up to December 2000. Lill has created a substantial body of work that has received professional production but little critical analysis to date. It is hoped that this bibliography will facilitate such analysis.
