L’accession des femmes britanniques à l’électorat en 1918 a été accompagnée d’une vague de spéculations quant à la façon dont les nouvelles électrices allaient faire usage de leur vote. En l’absence de sondages (ceux-ci n’apparaîtront qu’au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale), ces interrogations ont ressurgi à la veille de chaque élection pendant une dizaine d’années et ont été une incitation constante pour les hommes politiques à ne pas négliger ce nouvel électorat et à adapter leur discours. Le vote féminin a cessé par la suite de présenter un intérêt jusqu’à ce que, récemment, il redevienne objet de spéculations et de convoitise. L’objet de cet article est de montrer que, si les stratégies électorales ont changé et que, époque oblige, les médias jouent désormais un rôle central dans la mobilisation de l’électorat féminin, certaines constantes ressortent clairement d'une comparaison entre ces deux périodes, pourtant séparées de plus d'un demi-siècle – constantes dans les motivations des partis politiques et dans la représentation que ces derniers se font des électrices, mais également dans la façon dont les féministes ont pu encourager cet intérêt.
Abstract
The enfranchisement of women in 1918 provoked a good deal of speculation about what women would actually do with their votes. As there were no opinion polls yet (these only appeared after WWII), for about ten years the same questions were raised again and again on the eve of every election. Politicians were thus encouraged not to neglect this half of the electorate and to adapt their discourse to women voters. The women’s vote later ceased to be of any interest until recently, when it was again treated as an object of speculation and covetousness. The object of this article is to show that, if electoral strategies have changed and the media now play a more important role in the mobilization of the female electorate, some constant features clearly emerge from a comparison between these two periods –features in the motivations of political parties and the way the latter picture women voters but also in the way feminist activists may have encouraged this interest.
