In the history of Canadian labour and the left from 1900 to 1925 the radical life of Jack Kavanagh represents an important link between the politics of pre-war socialism and post-war communism. A prominent trade union leader and revolutionary propagandist in Vancouver, he was a founding member of the Communist Party of Canada in 1921 and its first provincial chairman in British Columbia. At the level of leadership, however, the foundation period of the communist movement in Vancouver was dominated by recurring disputes between Kavanagh and the party centre in Toronto, suggesting a kind of regional factionalism. This article reviews that historical experience and assesses Kavanagh's place in Canada's radical heritage.

The legacy of the socialist party of Canada has come down to us in phrases such as economic determinism, mechanistic materialism, impossiblism, and sectarianism. The life of Bill Pritchard reveals the humanist roots of the SPC and what the party' s leading thinkers owed to William Morris and the British ethical socialist tradition. That tradition was about "making socialists" who were educated, organized, and prepared to implement fully a socialist society. Bill Pritchard and other Marxian socialists, as much as they supported the Russian Revolution, were unwilling to submerge that goal in the program of the Third International. Their humanism, as much as their determinism, explains the choices they made and the legacy they left.

Cette tradition visait à former un cadre de socialistes instruits, organisés et résolus à fonder une société entièrement socialiste. Même s'ils appuyèrent la Révolution russe, Bill Pritchard et ses confrères marxiste-socialistes ne désiraient aucunement compromettre leur objectif à la faveur du programme de la Troisième Internationale. During the early 1920s the Communist Party of Canada (CPC) established a significant presence in industrial Cape Breton, based on support from the militant minority of the district's unusually combative coal mining union, UMWA District 26, and its charismatic Secretary-Treasurer James Bryson McLachlan. The latter's early recruitment was centrally important in forging what would become enduring political links with rank-and-file militants; it was largely thanks to McLachlan that, through all the ebb and flow of social context and human agency, the party survived the vicissitudes of deteriorating structural conditions and its own tactical blunders(most notably during the "third period"), to emerge in the mid-1930s with genuinely optimistic prospects. The Scot did not always lead his forces well: like many revolutionary contemporaries his bolshevik temperament was ill-suited to defensive struggle. He nevertheless perceived, and to a limited extent acted upon, the need to construct a defensive communist counter-culture within the struggle for workers' power in the community and the workplace. The embodiment of bolshevik intransigence, McLachlan offered a fixed rallying-point for "class fighters," especially those who shared his internationalist perspective. Having drawn a new layer of younger militants towards him in 1934-35 — and having seen off the CCF in the process - McLachlan could claim to have placed the CPC in its strongest position for a decade.

L'enrôlement rapide de McLachlan dans le PCC se révéla capital à la formation de liens politiques durables avec les militants de la base; c'est surtout grâce à McLachlan que le parti survécut aux vicissitudes de la détérioration des conditions structurelles régionales et de ses propres erreurs de stratégie (particulièrement aucours de la "troisième période"), pour pouvoir enfin envisager l'avenir du parti avec un optimisme véritable au milieu des années 1930. Tout comme plusieurs révolutionnaires contemporains dont le tempérament bolcheviste supportait mal une stratégie défensive, le leader écossais n'a pas toujours su bien mener ses forces. Il a néanmoins reconnu le besoin et parfois même contribué à l'essor d'une contre-culture communiste défensive dans la lutte pour le pouvoir ouvrier au sein de la communauté et du milieu de travail. Ayant attiré dans son orbite une nouvelle génération de militants, tout en abandonnant le part: CCF, McLachlan pouvait se féliciter d'avoir placé le PCC, en 1934-35, dans sa plus forte position politique depuis une décennie.

The resignation of J.B. McLachlan from the Communist Party of Canada in1936 is one of the more controversial episodes in the biography of a well-known Canadian labour radical. He was one of the few party leaders to enjoy wide recognition and popular support. His resignation was a difficult personal decision as well as a significant episode in the history of the party. In previous accounts his resignation has been presented alternately as a repudiation of labour radicalism generally and the Communist Party in particular, as a protest against the adoption of the united front in 1935, or as a form of local and personal political exceptionalism. McLachlan himself made no formal public announcement of his resignation and, except for an impromptu speech at a public meeting in September 1936, he remained largely silent. In response to a letter from party general secretary Tim Buck he prepared a personal explanation of his withdrawal from the party in June1936. This document, which is reproduced at the end of this article, remains the most important single piece of evidence concerning his resignation. An analysis of the circumstances leading to McLachlan's resignation shows that he did not regard his resignation as a repudiation of basic principles. He had supported the move towards the united front both internationally and domestically but disagreed with the implementation of the policy by the party leadership, especially as demonstrated in the case of the Amalgamated Mine Workers of Nova Scotia. McLachlan's view of the united front, which he considered to be consistent with the position of the Communist International, stressed the principles of internal democracy and local autonomy in the construction of the united front. In McLachlan's view there were already enough indications to show that leaders such as John L. Lewis had not been fundamentally transformed and that in the long run the decision to endorse an alliance of convenience with the established labour bureaucracy was an ambiguous legacy for the class struggle. In 1936 McLachlan was overtaken by events, but given his own history he was in a position to perceive the difficulties ahead more clearly than most of his contemporaries.

This article analyzes the contribution of Montréal working-class women to the family economy during the Depression of the 1930s and shows the impact of this unprecedented crisis on the different components of their domestic work. It is based on interviews with thirty women who married before 1934. Their testimonies reveal the extent of certain phenomenon such as the use of contraceptive methods and the paid work of women within the home and illustrate the extreme poverty in which they lived even before the Depression struck. Thus, for many of them, the period was nothing but a new episode in their struggle for survival.

Cet article vise à faire ressortir la contribution des femmes de la classe ouvrière montréalaise à l'économie familiale au cours de la Crise des années trente et à cerner l'impact de cette crise économique sur les différentes composantes de leur travail domestique. Une trentaine d'entrevues, réalisées auprès de femmes qui se sont mariées vers la fin des années vingt et au début des années trente, ont servi de base à la recherche. Leurs témoignages révèlent l'ampleur de certains phénomènes comme l'utilisation de moyens contraceptifs et le travail rémunéré à domicile, et mettent en relief la très grande pauvreté dans laquelle ces familles vivaient avant même que la Crise ne survienne. Pour plusieurs d'entre elles, la période des années trente n'a donc représenté qu'un épisode de plus dans leur lutte pour la survie.
