Abstract
This paper outlines and illustrates a few of the principles that might serve as a basis for a general semiotics of furniture form, meaning a description and analysis of domestic objects and utensils as a coherent system of signs related to human activity, to physical, social, and psychological needs, as well as to material context. The approach is both structural and inductive, anchored in specific examples drawn from French and English traditions between 1620 and 1840. The Louis styles are central to the argument, which proceeds from formal characteristics of shape, structure and immediate function to questions of aesthetic, psychological, and ideological intent.
Résumé
Cet article se propose d'esquisser et d'illustrer quelques principes qui pourraient servir de base à une sémiotique générale du mobilier, c'est-à-dire, à une description et analyse des objets et ustensiles domestiques en tant que système cohérent de signes reliés aux activités humaines, aux besoins physiques, sociaux et psychologiques de l'usager, ainsi qu’au contexte matériel. L'approche est à la fois structurale et inductive, fondée sur des exemples spécifiques provenant des traditions française et anglaise entre 1620 et 1840. Les styles Louis XIlI, XIV, XV, XVI et Empire constituent la matière première du propos qui se développe à partir d'une analyse des caractéristiques déforme, de structure et de fonction du meuble pour aboutir à des considérations d'ordre esthétique, psychologique et idéologique.
