The Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science (CJILS/RCSIB) is a refereed, scholarly periodical published by the Canadian Association of Information Science. Established in 1976, the journal is recognized internationally for its authoritative bilingual contributions to library and information science research. The editorial policy of the journal is to continue the advancement of library and information science in both English and French in Canada by serving as a forum for discussion of theory and research.

We welcome submissions in all areas of library and information science research. The journal has published research on such topics as information behaviour, information retrieval, professional issues, information organization, scholarly communication, information policy, research methods, and educational issues. The journal is dedicated to the publication of theory, research findings, book reviews, and letters to the editor.

Editorial policy and ethics

Focus and Scope

The Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science (CJILS/RCSIB) is an open access, refereed, scholarly periodical published three times per year by Western Libraries, University of Western Ontario on behalf of the Canadian Association for Information Science. The editorial policy of the journal is to continue the advancement of library and information science in both English and French in Canada by serving as a forum for discussion of theory and research.

We welcome submissions in all areas of library and information science research. The journal has published research on such topics as information behaviour, information retrieval, professional issues, information organization, scholarly communication, information policy, research methods, and educational issues. The journal is dedicated to the publication of theory, research findings, book reviews, and letters to the editor.

Authors need to register with the journal and follow all submission guidelines prior to submitting.

Peer Review Process

CJILS uses a double-blind peer review process. Individuals interested in becoming reviewers should contact the Editor-in-Chief.

Open Access Policy

This is an open access journal which means that all content is freely available without charge to the user or their institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author. This is in accordance with the BOAI definition of open access.

All content published in CJILS/RCSIB is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). This license allows authors and readers to share and adapt content for non-commercial purposes, provided that they abide by the following terms:

  • Give credit to the original author(s)/creator(s) and attribution parties (i.e., Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science)
  • Provide a link to the original source, to the extent practicable
  • Include the copyright notice and/or indicate the corresponding Creative Commons license (and provide a link to the license);
  • Indicate what, if any, adaptations were made to the original, and
  • Share adapted content under the same license as the original.

No Author Fees

The CJILS is an open source journal that is committed to having no author processing charges (APCs).

 

Information for contributors

Author Guidelines

We welcome submissions in all areas of library and information science research. The journal has published research on such topics as information behaviour, information retrieval, professional issues, information organization, scholarly communication, information policy, research methods, and educational issues. The journal is dedicated to the publication of theory, research findings, book reviews, and letters to the editor.

All manuscripts are double-blind, peer reviewed.

Submissions to the journal should use our submission platform

Submissions should include the following:

  • A separate cover sheet for the editor with
    • Manuscript title
    • Author name(s)
    • Author affiliations
    • Author's email
    • Author's Orchid ID (if available)
    • An about the author statement of no more than 100 words
    • A list of 5-7 keywords describing your manuscript
    • If possible, a list of 3 suggested referees and their email addresses
  • Please use the manuscript template for submissions
    • Begins with a 50-100 word abstract 
    • Must be the author’s original research that has not been previously published and not currently under review in another publication.
    • Can be up to 7,000 words inclusive of references
    • Must be submitted in one of the following formats – OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF file format
    • Must have all illustrations, figures, and tables placed within the text at the appropriate points
    • Must be single-spaced, in a 12-point font
    • Must have all identifying information removed for peer review

Other submission notes:

  • CJILS follows Chicago Author-Date style
  • Use italics rather than underlining where applicable
  • Use endnotes rather than footnotes
