Résumé
Quel est l’imaginaire urbain esquissé par Pasolini dans ses films ? Quelles sont les formes de la ville imaginées dans son oeuvre, d’abord à Rome puis dans d’autres cités, dans les pays du « tiers-monde » ? Cet article tente de répondre à ces questions en partant de l’hypothèse que le cinéaste aborde la représentation de la ville en ayant à l’esprit l’urbs intacte, dont l’identité pure, presque mythique, est encore gardée par ses murs antiques (comme par le cadenas qui assure l’inviolabilité de l’image de la ville dans la célèbre Vue de Florence « à la chaîne »), et qu’il vit comme une blessure profonde toute tentative d’ouvrir ce type de ville à la contemporanéité ; ce qui l’amène à prendre la défense de la ville entière, même dans ses aspects les plus ordinaires et les moins monumentaux, de la même manière qu’il défend la littérature populaire et la poésie dialectale, tout aussi importantes à ses yeux que l’oeuvre de Dante ou de Pétrarque.
Abstract
What sort of imaginary urban life does Pasolini outline in his films? What are the forms of the cities pictured in his work, first Rome and then other cities, in the “Third World”? This article attempts to answer these questions by starting from two hypotheses: first, that Pasolini approached depiction of the city with the intact urbs in mind, whose pure and almost mythical identity was still maintained within its ancient walls (like the lock which ensures the inviolability of the image of the city in the famous View of Florence “with the Chain”); and second, that he saw any attempt to open this kind of city up to contemporary life as a deep wound. This led him to take up the defence of the entire city, even its most ordinary and least monumental aspects, in the same way that he championed popular literature and poetry in dialect, which in his eyes were as important as the work of Dante or Petrarch.
