Résumé
Dans l'iconographie des États-Unis, le Vermont évoque par son seul nom un genre de vie dépassé ; un environnement sain et équilibré, y compris un paysage domestiqué mais non encore profané ; de même qu'un parc de récréation géant, vert ou blanc, aux confins de la Mégalopolis. Ces agréments de marque ont convergé pour façonner l'image nationale de l'état dont le fond est néanmoins en contradiction avec l'espace vécu. La construction de l'image, favorisée par une propagande fantaisiste, provient des impulsions venues des grandes villes. Bien des citadins recherchent dans la campagne bucolique un refuge mental pour leurs valeurs les plus chères. Certaines initiatives étatiques portent à croire que la force de l'image peut mouler le territoire, réduisant ainsi l'écart entre le mythe et la réalité.

Abstract
The State of Vermont conveys to the average American a simple way or life ; a tamed but unspoiled rural landscape ; a healthy, balanced environment ; and a kind of sports park, green in summer, white in winter, on the edge of Megalopolis. These amenties have amalgamated to form a composite geographical image, one however, that contradicts the reality of the state. This distorted image, promoted by exaggerative publicity, is a reflection of a larger American search for bliss and stability in the countryside as a foil to the pressures or urban living and rapid social and economic change. Efforts within the state to fulfill the ideal suggest that the image has considerable power of transformation.
