Résumé
Grâce à la collaboration de l'Unesco, la Commission de l'U.G.I. sur l'enseignement de la Géographie a pu jouer un rôle important sur le plan international entre 1952 et 1968. L'Unesco, en effet, avait tenu un stage international sur la pédagogie géographique à Montréal en 1950, et il est permis d'affirmer que les activités de la Commission découlèrent en majeure partie des recommandations des participants à ce stage. Présidée par le Doyen Neville Scarfe, 1952-1956, la Commission a d'abord fait un inventaire par correspondance des besoins de cet enseignement à travers le monde. Entre 1956 et 1960, la Commission a travaillé sur le contenu des programmes et sur les méthodes à préconiser. M. l'Inspecteur-général René Clozier a préparé un rapport sur l'adaptation des programmes au niveau mental des élèves.
La période de 1960 à 1964 fut consacrée à la préparation du Manuel de l'Unesco sur l'enseignement de la géographie, période durant laquelle le président a visité une douzaine de pays d'Asie et tenu le premier colloque de la Commission à Bangkok, en Thaïlande. Enfin, entre 1964 et aujourd'hui, les travaux de la Commission se firent par une série de colloques : celui du Collège Goldsmith durant le XXe Congrès international de Géographie à Londres en 1964, puis ceux tenus en Afrique, à Addis-Abéba en 1965, à Accra en 1967, au Caire en 1968, et en Amérique latine, à Santiago en 1967 et Caracas en 1969, finalement celui de Madras durant le XXIe Congrès en 1968. La Commission se nomme désormais la Géographie dans l'Éducation, dotée d'objectifs élargis, mais elle poursuit ses efforts dans le domaine pédagogique soit par ses colloques, soit par la diffusion de son Manuel déjà traduit en douze langues.
Abstract
Due to Unesco's assistance, the I.G.U. Commission on the Teaching of Geography has been able to play an important role at the international level between 1952 and 1968. At Montréal in 1950, Unesco has sponsored an international Seminar on the teaching of Geography, and it may be stated that most of the activities of the Commission were organized as the follow-up of that Seminar. During its first period of existence 1952-56, the Commission under Dean Neville Scarpe made a survey by correspondence of the status and needs of Geography teaching in the World. Between 1956 and 1960 work was made on the contents of the school curriculum and on the teaching methods. A major report has been published by M. René Clozier on the adaptation of the programmes to the mental level of pupils. The next period, 1960 to 1964, was devoted to the preparation of the Unesco Source book on the Teaching of Geography ; a period during which the Chairman has been able to visit 12 countries of Asia, and to hold the first of the Commission's symposia at Bangkok, Thailand. Later, since 1964, the main activities were devoted to those meetings of Geography teachers and specialists in many countries of the World. Beginning at Goldsmith's College during the 20th International Geographical Congress, London 1964, the series extented to Africa : Addis Abeba 1965, Accra 1967, Cairo 1968 ; to Latin America : Santiago 1967, Caracas 1969 ;to Asia with the Madras Symposium during the 21 st Congress in 1968. Under a new name, Geography in Education, the Commission will continue to hold meetings and to help teachers with its Source Book, a best seller among Unesco Publications, now published in 12 languages.
