Résumé
L’oeuvre de Brian Friel s’inscrit dans la veine d’une tradition dramatique qui a émergé au cours de la « Renaissance celtique » artistique à la fin du XIXe siècle. Artisan d’un « théâtre rituel », il explore la question de l’identité irlandaise prise dans le flux de l’histoire, par l’entremise d’une dramaturgie sans cesse renouvelée. L’on peut qualifier son écriture comme étant à la fois anti-postmoderne, par les buts pédagogiques qu’il se fixe, et postmoderne, puisqu’une partie de son originalité se trouve dans le croisement des genres.
Abstract
Brian Friel works in the vein of a dramatic tradition inherited from the artistic "Celtic Revival" in the late 19th century. An advocate of "theatre as ritual", he explores the question of Irish identity caught in the flux of history through ever-changing dramatic forms. The purpose of his serious, pedagogical approach excludes him as a postmodernist, yet—perhaps paradoxically—, the blending of genres that characterizes his work is in itself profoundly postmodern.
