I examine a dialogue between the Renaissance Supplements to Virgil’s Aeneid by Pier Candido Decembrio and Maffeo Vegio. I argue that Decembrio’s short poem is not unfinished but instead provides the Iliadic ending to the Aeneid that Virgil withholds, namely a lament over Turnus’s body to match the lament over Hector at the end of Iliad 24. I then argue that Decembrio’s poem presents us with a dangerously unstable situation in Italy, dominated by commemorations of Turnus in such heroic terms that they threaten to displace Virgil’s hero Aeneas from primacy in his own story. Vegio’s response “corrects” this portrayal of Turnus in favour of a more orthodox Virgilian narrative in which Turnus is a tragically misguided enemy of Aeneas’s divine mission to Italy. I conclude with a new edition and translation of Decembrio’s Supplement, drawing on both of the extant manuscripts and addressing several textual difficulties.

Nous examinons un dialogue entre les Suppléments à l’Énéide de Virgile composés par Pier Candido Decembrio et par Maffeo Vegio. Nous avançons que le bref poème de Decembrio n’est pas inachevé, mais qu’il fournit plutôt la fin iliadique à l’Énéide retenue par Virgile, à savoir une complainte sur le corps de Turnus qui correspond à la complainte sur Hector à la fin du chant 24 de l’Iliade. Nous suggérons ensuite que le poème de Decembrio met en scène une situation dangereusement instable en Italie, dominée par les commémorations de Turnus en des termes si héroïques qu’elles menacent de destituer le héros virgilien, Énée, de sa primauté dans son propre récit. La réponse de Vegio « corrige » ce portrait de Turnus en faveur d’un récit virgilien plus orthodoxe dans lequel Turnus, tragiquement dans l’erreur, est un ennemi de la mission divine d’Énée en Italie. Nous concluons en proposant une nouvelle édition et traduction du Supplément de Decembrio, en nous appuyant sur les deux manuscrits existants et en abordant plusieurs difficultés textuelles.

The Astronomicon libri of Basinio da Parma is the first Latin astronomical poem written during the Italian humanism movement. According to the information we possess, Basinio composed the poem at the Malatestian court in 1455. It is usually believed that the work is nothing more than an “imitation” of Aratus’s Phaenomena or Hyginus’s De astronomia, and that it lacks real scientific competence in the astronomical and astrological fields. This article, however, aims to present a brief analysis of the poem by examining the results that have emerged through the preparation of its new critical edition. In particular, thanks to both the recognition of a new Basinio autograph and the Greek glosses inserted therein, this article will show how Cleomedes’s Greek astronomical treatise, Μετέωρα (Caelestia), can be considered the main source of Basinio’s Astronomicon libri.

D’après les informations dont nous disposons, Basinio a composé ce poème à la cour malatestienne en 1455. In his Neo-Latin poem Chrysopoeia (1515), the Italian humanist Giovanni Aurelio Augurello often declares to be outdoing the ancients in writing the first alchemical poem in Latin. Is this simply an instance of what E. R. Curtius called outdoing a topos? Or is Augurello’s poem actually venturing onto a metaphorically untrodden path? Based on an analysis of Chrysopoeia, its genesis, and its sources, this article aims to assess the extent of this poem’s novelty. In particular, my interpretation focuses on this text’s poetic transpositions of non-literary sources, and more specifically Geber’s Summa perfectionis and other medieval alchemical texts.

This article explores the relation between poetry, place, and the concept of epigram as site-specific writing in the Coryciana. Published in 1524 in an edition assembled by Blosius Palladius, this multi-author, predominantly epigrammatic collection in honour of the humanist and apostolic protonotary Johann Goritz focuses on two prime sites within the city of Renaissance Rome: Goritz’s column chapel in Sant’Agostino, and his vineyard-villa near Trajan’s Forum. The poets and editors of the Coryciana participate in a collaborative placemaking project, plotting Goritz’s new sites of piety and culture in relation to the places of Greco-Roman antiquity and the modern city. At the same time, they represent the collection itself as a textual space, imbued with the commemorative, encyclopedic, and canonizing capacities of sites and built structures in ancient and contemporary Rome.

Plus encore, le temps où advient la lecture d’un texte n’est pas nécessairement le temps de l’écriture de celui-ci, si bien que le traducteur introduit souvent le texte qu’il traduit à une dimension temporelle différente du texte originel et que ce dernier ne pouvait prévoir d’emblée. À cet égard, l’étude des traductions s’inscrit dans un contexte assez vaste où le chercheur doit expliquer les différents éléments qui ont mené à telle ou telle lecture du texte traduit. Ce type d’étude, la « philologie génétique de la traduction », trouve ici un exemple dans la contextualisation de la première traduction française connue du Phédon de Platon par Jean de Luxembourg.

This article aims to illustrate how translation is a witness to the way texts are read from one era to another, and how the translator translates a text in much the same way as he reads it (Ut legis ita vertis !) Moreover, the age in which a text is read is not necessarily the one in which it was written, so that the translator often introduces the text to be translated into a different time period than that of the original and one which the author could not have earlier foreseen. In this respect, the study of translations is part of a broader context in which the researcher must draw out the different elements that led to a particular reading of the translated text. This type of study, the “genetic philology of translation”, finds an example here in the contextualisation of the first known French translation of Plato’s Phaedo by Jean de Luxembourg.

Claude Boudan, moine célestin d’un statut considérable, qui remplit plusieurs offices au sein de l’Ordre monastique, fut aussi un auteur de vers latins à la fois productif et talentueux. Parmi ses oeuvres nombreuses qui demeurent en manuscrit, le long poème en hexamètres dactyliques, intitulé De mutua hugonostici belli et catholicae pacis collatione carmen heroicum, constitue une prestation unique dans la mesure où elle donne la perspective, claire et directe, du poète monastique sur les événements récents et l’actualité des Guerres de religion en France. Écrit sur un ton énergique et même parfois polémique, ce poème raconte plusieurs incidents violents survenus entre le début des années 1560 et le massacre de la Saint-Barthélemy en 1572, d’un point de vue résolument partisan. Il ressemble en cela à une bonne part de la poésie polémique composée pendant cette période, par des auteurs aussi divers que Ronsard, d’Aubigné, Jean Dorat et Léger Duchesne.

Claude Boudan was a Celestine monk of significant stature, who held several offices within the Order. He was also a prolific and talented author of Latin verse. Among his numerous works still in manuscript, the long poem in dactylic hexameters, titled De mutua hugonostici belli et catholicae pacis collatione carmen heroicum, is unique insofar as it offers his perspective on the contemporaneous events of the Wars of Religion in France. Written in an energetic, and at times eve polemical tone, the poem describes several violent incidents that occurred during the period beginning in the early 1560S and preceding the Saint Bartholomew’s Massacre of 1572, adopting a resolutely partisan point of view. In this, it resembles much of the polemical poetry written during the period, by authors as diverse as Ronsard, d’Aubigné, Jean Dorat, and Léger Du Chesne.

L’Italien Benedetto Tagliacarne, dit Théocrène, occupa la charge de précepteur des fils de François Ier, de 1527 à 1533. À ce titre, il évolua dans l’intimité de la famille royale, ce dont témoignent ses oeuvres poétiques, publiées à Poitiers, chez Marnef, en 1536, et notamment ses épigrammes qui orchestrent des événements de cour et mettent en scène un roi esthète et poète. Théocrène célèbre ainsi les noces du roi et d’Éléonore d’Autriche et rend hommage à Louise de Savoie ; il fait l’éloge des productions poétiques de François Ier, choisissant l’épitaphe de la muse de Pétrarque, Laure de Noves, mais aussi la traduction d’une épigramme attribuée à Germanicus ; enfin, il compose de nombreuses ekphraseis des oeuvres d’art du roi. L’étude de ces épigrammes permettra d’évaluer la contribution du poète italien à la politique culturelle de François Ier et à la mythologie du règne.

The Italian Benedetto Tagliacarne, known as Theocrenus, was tutor to the sons of Francis I from 1527 to 1533. In this capacity, he was closely involved with the royal family, as witnessed by his poetic works, published in Poitiers by Marnef in 1536, and in particular his epigrams, which shaped court events and portray an artistically refined and poetic king. Theocrenus thus celebrates the wedding of the king and Eleanor of Austria and pays tribute to Louise of Savoy; he praises the poetic compositions of Francis I, choosing the epitaph of Petrarch’s muse, Laura de Noves, but also the translation of an epigram attributed to Germanicus; finally, he composes numerous ekphraseis of the king’s works of art. The study of these epigrams allows us to evaluate the contribution of the Italian poet to the cultural policy of Francis I and to the mythology of the reign.
