This article considers the ways in which Aristotle’s notion of hamartia (ἁμαρτία) in the Poetics—the tragic fault that leads to the protagonist’s downfall—was rendered in sixteenth-century translations and commentaries produced in Italy. While early Latin translations and commentaries initially translated the term as error, mid-Cinquecento literary critics and theorists frequently used a term that implied sin: peccatum/peccato. Was this linguistic choice among sixteenth-century translators indicative of a broader attempt to Christianize the Poetics? While there were significant attempts on the part of translators and commentators to moralize the Poetics, this study of how hamartia was translated suggests that such interpretations were not Counter-Reformation distortions of Aristotle’s Poetics but rather part of a broader program of cultural translation—expressing the linguistic influence of a religious public, but not necessarily a moralizing interpretation—domesticating the Greek philosopher for an early modern Christian audience.

Plaisance pense qu’il ne différait guère de l’autographe approuvé par l’auteur peu de temps auparavant, la comédie a été en réalité censurée à Venise, réécrite et adaptée à un public non florentin par un réviseur qui n’a aucune perception de l’espace théâtral, qui raccourcit de nombreuses répliques et est obsédé par la chasse aux répétitions, et qu’il ne faut donc pas confondre variantes éditoriales et corrections d’auteur.

In the 1976 edition of Anton Francesco Grazzini’s La Strega, the author of this article found reason to suspect the textual differences between the Magl. VII 1385 autograph version and the 1582 editions published by the Giunti of Venise in 12° and in 8°. M. Durante has since sought to rehabilitate these differences as corrections that Grazzini would have entered himself. This article relies on a new comparison between these three sources in order to address the question in a new light from the perspective of Grazzini’s intention, in the mid 1570’s, of having his works published. The analysis of both editions shows that from a manuscript which, according to M. Plaisance, did not significantly differ from the autograph manuscript Grazzini had approved shortly before the edition, the comedy was in fact censured in Venice, as well as rewritten and adapted for a non-Florentine audience by a redactor. This latter had absolutely no sense of theatrical space, he shortened many lines and was obsessed with filtering out the repetitions. One should then carefully distinguish between editorial variants and author’s corrections.

Several scholars, utilizing traditional reading-based methods, have highlighted intertextual links between the anonymous domestic tragedy Arden of Faversham (1590) and John Lyly’s comedy Endymion, The Man in the Moon (1588). The authorship of Arden of Faversham is fiercely contested: Brian Vickers and the present writer have argued for Thomas Kyd’s sole authorship, whereas MacDonald P. Jackson and his New Oxford Shakespeare colleagues have contended for Shakespeare’s part authorship. This article draws upon electronic corpora in order to highlight matching utterances between the Kentish tragedy and Lyly’s comedy, and suggests that the quantity of rare and/or unique verbal parallels with Endymion is indicative of a single author’s acquisitive practices. The article proceeds to explore these matches in context in order to broaden our understanding of the relations between these plays, and the composition of Arden of Faversham as a whole.

This essay demonstrates that Arden of Faversham and A Woman Killed with Kindness explore important tensions in the Elizabethan understanding of the lived experience of the damned. Calvinist theologians tended to describe reprobation in terms that unintentionally suggested direct divine agency and responsibility, despite their insistence that culpability for sin lies in human nature. Aligning closely with Calvinist visions of reprobation, the plays characterize their villains as feeling compulsions to sin so powerful that they are experienced as external impositions, even as these characters presume their own internal sinfulness. The agonizing inescapability of these characters’ compulsions is emphasized through contrast with the ambiguous liberations of the plays’ female protagonists. The plays highlight the contradiction in Calvinist descriptions of reprobation by generating dramatic effects that prompt audiences to suspect that what the tortured reprobates experience as divine interference is real rather than merely a projection of guilt. Despite their Calvinist elements, the plays reinforce the doubts raised by anti-Calvinists about English Calvinism’s predestinarian theology.

This article considers the narrative and theatrical strategies used by Thomas Heywood to sanctify Elizabeth I as a virgin martyr saint in the remarkable, yet understudied, Reformation history play If You Know Not Me, You Know Nobody, Part I, or the Troubles of Queen Elizabeth (ca. 1605). I examine how Heywood reads against Foxe even as he draws on the history of the English Reformation from the Book of Martyrs to create a narrative of virgin martyrdom; I discuss how the play’s miraculous theatricality re-forms past iterations of religious knowledge in drama, and show that the play recovers hagiography for English Protestantism. I conclude by suggesting that Heywood invented the Stuart saint play.
