About

MONSTRUM is a biannual, open-access academic journal publishing original, peer-reviewed scholarship in horror and related areas, in English or French, by developing and established scholars working on cinema, television, literature, media studies, popular culture, genre, philosophy, cultural studies, and other fields. The journal is published by the Montréal Monstrum Society, which grew out of a community of scholars and fan-scholars in Montréal and abroad.

Editorial policy and ethics

Monstrum publishes original scholarship, translations, and reviews. The primary languages of publication are English and French. Monstrum conducts blind and if necessary double-blind peer review, in additional peer review by the Monstrum editors. If their essay is selected, authors can expect peer review comments between one and two months after submission.

Monstrum is free and open-access. No subscription, submission, or publication fees are required.

Authors and contributors retain their copyright and intellectual property rights for their work and may republish their work in any other form or forum (book, edited collection, etc.). We ask only that 1) the editors of Monstrum be informed of the intent to republish, and 2) that previous publication of the article in Monstrum is acknowledged in the subsequent publication.

Re-use of Open Access Content under Creative Commons CC-BY licensing in the form of citations must comply with the following terms.

• Full attribution must accompany any re-use (referencing the work in other scholarly or creative work).​
• Creative Commons license terms for re-use do not apply to any content (such as graphs, figures, photos, excerpts, etc.) not original to the Open Access article and further permission may be required from the rights holder. The obligation to research and clear permission lies solely with the party re-using the material.
• Re-use of a work must not imply or otherwise suggest sponsorship or endorsement by Monstrum, the author(s), or other third party.
• Creative Commons licenses do not negate the moral rights of authors, including but not limited to the right to attribution and the right that a work not be subjected to derogatory treatment that threatens the honour or reputation of the author(s).
