The documentary film Kouchibouguac, released by the Office national du film (ONF) in 1979, allowed Acadians – who had been removed from their lands to allow the creation of the national park of the same name – to tell their stories. This article explores the making of the film, with a particular focus upon the difficulties experienced by Acadians trying to find their voice within the Québécois-dominated ONF. It also reflects on the form of the film as well as the impact that it had within an Acadian population that was divided over the sporadically violent opposition to the park.

Cet article explore la production de ce film en portant une attention particulière aux difficultés que les Acadiens ont rencontrées en essayant de trouver leur voix à l’intérieur de l’ONF, dominé par des Québécois. Il examine aussi le film sur le plan de la forme ainsi que l’impact qu’il a eu parmi une population acadienne divisée par l’opposition parfois violente à la création du parc.

This article examines the program of urban renewal undertaken by the City of Halifax in the mid-1960s that resulted in the destruction of the African Canadian neighbourhood of Africville. Focusing on how the relocation was carried out gives us a very different view of the workings of the postwar state – specifically, of the contingencies of power and the complexities of its exercise. Africville is important not just as an example of racism, but for what it reveals about the dynamics of state power and the meanings of the good life embedded in the welfare state.

Cet article examine le programme de rénovation urbaine mis en œuvre par la Ville de Halifax au milieu des années 1960, qui a conduit à la destruction du quartier d’Africville, habité par des Afro Canadiens. En mettant l’accent sur la façon dont ses habitants ont été relocalisés, cet article nous donne un aperçu très différent du fonctionnement de l’État dans l’après-guerre, plus précisément des contingences du pouvoir et de la complexité de son exercice. Le cas d’Africville est important non seulement comme exemple de racisme, mais aussi pour ce qu’il révèle au sujet de la dynamique du pouvoir de l’État et de ce que signifie la qualité de vie coulée dans le moule de l’État providence.

The Fogo Island film partnership of the National Film Board and the Memorial University of Newfoundland Extension Service helped establish a fisheries cooperative on Fogo Island and, in the process, a template for the NFB’s Challenge for Change program. The Fogo Island films have achieved near-mythic status in film studies and film history as a coup for the NFB, but the role of the Newfoundland partners has been largely ignored. This article addresses this gap in the literature, and traces how the project and the process behind it helped to spark the "cultural revolution" of the 1970s in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Le partenariat en cinéma formé par l’Office national du film (ONF) et le Memorial University of Newfoundland Extension Service à l’île Fogo a aidé à l’établissement d’une coopérative de pêche dans l’île Fogo et, par la même occasion, à la création d’un modèle de référence pour le programme Société nouvelle, de l’ONF. Les films de l’île Fogo ont acquis un sorte de statut mythique dans les études cinématographiques et l’histoire du cinéma comme un beau coup de l’ONF, mais on a largement ignoré le rôle des partenaires terre-neuviens. Cet article veut corriger cette lacune dans la documentation et relate comment le projet et le processus qui y a mené ont contribué à déclencher la « révolution culturelle » des années 1970 à Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador.

Francis Tumblety, the "Celebrated Indian Herb Doctor," arrived in Saint John in the summer of 1860. He quickly became embroiled in conflict with the established medical community and even stood accused of manslaughter. This article examines Tumblety’s brief stay in Saint John as a way of illustrating the contested nature of medical practice in the mid-19th century. Understanding the career of such a practitioner provides insight into the range of therapeutic choices that were available during these years and into the struggle of orthodox medicine to limit these choices.

Il fut vite en conflit avec la communauté médicale établie et fut même accusé d’homicide involontaire. Cet article s’intéresse au bref séjour de Tumblety à Saint John comme une façon d’illustrer le caractère contesté de la pratique de la médecine au milieu du 19e siècle. La carrière d’un tel praticien jette un éclairage sur l’éventail des choix thérapeutiques qui étaient offerts durant ces années et sur la lutte livrée par la médecine conventionnelle pour limiter ces choix.

In the autumn of 1953 the Cambridge economic historian, C.R. Fay, presented a series of lectures at Memorial University based on his tours of the province. As a collector of all things Newfoundland and an observer of island’s shifting place within empire, Fay laid the foundation for a cultural renaissance in Newfoundland studies. Ultimately, however, the scope of his project, his personal bias, and indifference to the island’s historiography undermined his research and his significance as a historian of Newfoundland.

À l’automne de 1953, C.R. Fay, historien de l’économie de Cambridge, a présenté une série d’exposés à la Memorial University inspirés de ses voyages dans la province. Collectionneur de tout ce qui était de Terre-Neuve et observateur de la place changeante de l’île au sein de l’empire, Fay a posé les fondements d’une renaissance culturelle en études terre-neuviennes.
